Preserve Your Story

What I Do

Oral history is the practice of interviewing and recording people’s experiences in their own voices — preserving not just what happened, but the feelings, reflections, and meaning behind it.

Interview & Recording Sessions

Generally run 60–90 minutes, though I leave space for more; every story unfolds at its own pace. All sessions are offered virtually via Zoom or in person in the New York City area. Rates available upon inquiry. Sessions may also be purchased as a gift.

Transcription, Editing & Preservation

These sessions are gentle and conversational, designed to make you feel comfortable as you reflect and share. Each includes a professionally edited audio recording and a full transcript of your story, preserved as a keepsake for your family. Your story becomes a gift for yourself, your child, and generations to come.

About Me

Professional headshot

I’m Romy March David, an oral historian and storyteller with a master’s degree in Oral History from Columbia University. I created The First Chapter to help women find and tell their birth stories, which so often fade into a blur in the tender days of early motherhood. My own mother remembers very little about my birth, and it would be so meaningful if I could hear her voice from those first days of life together. In speaking with other mothers, I realized how common it is for these stories to slip away, yet they are some of the most profound experiences of life.

Before Columbia, I worked in journalism, where I fell in love with listening closely and telling stories with honesty and depth. My passion has always centered on women’s health and preserving voices that often go unheard.

Through guided oral history interviews, I help mothers reflect on their journeys to pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and early motherhood — capturing and preserving these stories so they can be remembered for generations.

Words Shared

Romy asked such great questions that helped me open up and share my story. She has a thoughtful presence and a genuine curiosity in the people she is working with. It felt so easy to open up with her.

— Eugenia

I am so grateful that my birth story is preserved for my family. Pregnancy and birth happen so quickly you don’t even have a moment to process it all. It becomes a blur. Romy guided me throughout our session to remember details and feelings that made my journey unique. The transcript will be a beautiful addition to my son’s baby book.

— Juliette
